Short Snippets – {My Fashion Memories part 1}

I was so excited, when completely by accident, I stumbled upon this old YDE print ad, that I can still so clearly remember from back in the day! It was one of my favorites and I remember tearing it from the magazine and sticking it in my scrapbook! It describes to me exactly how I feel about fashion, its a part of me, its in my BLOOD! I *bleed* fashion!! LOVE it :)

Mej. Lues at the Vodacom Durban July Canon Invited Designer Showcase!!!

So the news is officially out, I have been selected as one of this year’s Invited Designers for the VDJ!! I am excited beyond words and I thought this would be a great opportunity to share with you my journey in this amazing event. It is truly an honour for me to be selected as one of the Invited Designers, as it is something I have been working towards since the beginning of my career!

In my 3rd year of studying at Victoria Toma in Bloemfontein, I entered the VDJ Fashion Challenge, honestly as jaded about life as any student is at that stage. Not for one second even entertaining the thought of being selected! I mean there would only be ONE finalist chosen out of the entire Free State province! What are the chances, I thought….

Well, to my amazement, I was informed by a very lovely lady by the name of Tiffany Prior, that I have been chosen and I would have to make my garment to showcase at the VDJ!! Well, at that time I was slap bang in the middle of exams, as well as a massive sewing project at school that had us sleeping and sewing in our classrooms for 4 days straight! So with the help of my lecturer and principal, we pulled yet another all-nighter, and we completed my gorgeous ensemble. I am to this day still so proud when I look at the photos from that first competition. A beautiful design that I can truly say, I will love forever.

Since that first VDJ competition, waaaaaaaay back in 2005, I have taken part in the Fashion Challenge for 7 consecutive years. 6 times from the Free State and once as a Durbanite! In 2012 I was a finalist in the pre-raceday competition, hosted by Gateway Theatre of shopping. In which we had to design and make a dress from 70% recycled materials! I did not enter any garments on raceday that year, I didn’t even attend that year’s July as my mom had passed away 2 days before….. It was a dark time for our family, but this year I can honestly say I know my mommy would be so proud to hear I have finally made it to Invited Designer!!

So this year, I am dedicating my collection to my Mom. Celebrating her life, rather that remembering her death.

{So many NEW things!}

I have been VERY guilty of neglecting my beloved blog! For that I apologize profusely, but after you read what I’ve all been up too, you will surely forgive me!

Well, firstly I’ll start with my invitation to show at the now annual, Fashion by the Sea fashion show at Ushaka Moyo Pier, here in our beautiful city of Durban. Fashionistas were treated to the collections of many acclaimed local designers, as well as a handful of ‘New Talent’. I was one of these ‘New Talent’ entries.

My collection was inspired by our beautiful shore line and the coral reefs, colors, textures and movements!

Next up I was selected as a finalist in the Gateway Theatre of shopping Ecouture Recycle competition, that formed part of the Vodacom Durban July Pre-Party line-up. My garment was made from plastic, scraps of fabric and thread, pieces of vilene and stayflex, as well as used pattern paper. My theme was ‘The Cutting Room Floor’. The brief for the competition was basically to design a race-day ensemble, to the theme of the VDJ. Made from 70% RECYCLED materials! How awesome is that? I definitely had to think way out of my box for this one!

I was also invited to showcase at 3 Vodacom Durban July marquees this year. I showed collections at the Bloom Marketing tent, The Afrotainment tent as well as the massive MTV BASE Lifestyle Oasis marquee village.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend these last to functions, as my dear mother passed away very suddenly on the Thursday night before the July weekend. She had lost her very brave battle with cancer. I climbed on a plane that Friday morning and flew to my daddy in Bloem, because I knew that regardless of everything that was happening in my career, my family needed me to be there.

But, there was no time for me to even digest the events of that week, because the day of my mom’s funeral I was called back to Durban, as I was put on the shortlist by the KZN Fashion Council, to possibly showcase at SA FASHION WEEK in September! So the next morning I boarded a plane and attended my interview withe the KZNFC.

After a few days of nail-biting, I was informed that I was selected to show my WINTER 2013 collection on the ramp at SA FASHION WEEK!!

So now, I am in the process of finalizing my collection and getting ready for one of the BIGGEST dreams of my life, that is about to come true >>>>>>>>>>

{Mej. Lues} on the ramp, at SA FASHION WEEK in Johannesburg !!!!!!!!!!!!

My Pick for the Best Dressed on the Red Carpet at Grammys 2012

In the wake of a very sad loss to the music industry, with the passing of Whitney Houston, The Grammy 2012 ceremony was a mixture of celebration, mourning & I am sure, a lot of self-reflection. So many hugely talented artists have thrown their lives & careers away because of addiction & substance abuse. In the end it comes down to the individual, not the stage persona we all loved & admired. The individual person. Their struggles, hard-ships, emotional needs and lack of true understanding from their family and friends. For who can truly understand the pressure of having to constantly live up to the name of ‘Elvis’, ‘Michael Jackson’ or ‘Whitney Houston’. In the end, they are all just human, like each one of us. With the same fears, needs and emotional baggage. I truly think its time for the music industry to form a support structure for these stars. They are, after all, part of THEIR community and no matter how much we might love and idolize them, only their peers will ever understand what it means to deal with the pressures of being a multi-million-dollar superstar.

But, now that I got that off of my chest, here are my top 5 best dressed ladies on this year’s Grammy Red Carpet!
I am in LOVE with Katy Perry’s look!! All I will say is, Russell Brand, BURN!!

Rihanna looks absolutely smoldering, as usual, in simple, but striking, black. Kelly Osborne looks absolutely luminous in her metallic gown & lavender hair combo.

Adele, sweeping up most of the awards on the night, is a true classic beauty. Looking better than ever!

Snaps to Taylor Swift for her courage fashion effort, futuristic, metallic and oh so glam! She is growing up to be a style-icon-to-watch!
